YWCA Brooklyn extends our deepest condolences to the family and friends of George “Big Floyd” Floyd and to the larger Minneapolis community. We are outraged by the continued violence, brutality and abuse of power by those in law enforcement towards people of color in this country. As facts are still coming to light, and federal, state, and local authorities review George Floyd’s death, we believe strongly there should be independent oversight to assure that the police officers involved are held accountable and that justice is delivered.

As a social justice organization with a mission to empower women and eliminate racism, we must mobilize and we must engage our community to address institutional racism and abuse of power.

Over the next week, we will be launching our very own YWCA Brooklyn #icantbreathe campaign where you will hear the voices of women and girls of color throughout Brooklyn, each with their own “call to action.” We hope you will join us on our mission to promote racial justice and gender equity.
