SAAM at YWCA Brooklyn

Each year, YWCA Brooklyn participates in #DenimDay programming across the city, initially inspired by a 1992 Italian Supreme Court Decision that failed a young woman after an assault. This year marked another global protest against sexual violence and a powerful public challenge to victim-blaming myths.

The YW LEADers came together for the annual advocacy event, Defend Your Denim, in partnership with the Center for Anti Violence Education for a day of training, art and empowerment. Our students made signs that demanded consent is key, and that dispelled harmful misconceptions about sexual assault.

On April 29, our YW LEADers took to the streets for the official Denim Day NYC March and Rally, holding their signs as a show of solidarity with survivors. The march began at Brooklyn Borough Hall, led the marchers across the Brooklyn Bridge and culminated at David Dinkins Municipal Building where speakers addressed the crowd.

As part of the YWCA National Network, we are proud to stand alongside our sister Associations across the nation that provide critical services and support to survivors of sexual assault and their families.

As we recognize a quarter of a century of #SAAM uniting us in the common mission to end sexual assault once and for all, let's celebrate the service providers and advocates who work each day to build the road to healing and lift the voices and experiences of survivors. #25YearsStronger
