Interactive Youth Summit in partnership with The Dinner Table Doc
Brooklyn Borough Hall welcomed 100+ Brooklyn girls, ages 10-18, in a partnership between The Dinner Table Doc and YWCA Brooklyn for a community-building event and discussion on the topic of navigating high school, college and beyond. This was the second installment of the summit coined The Miseducation of Brown Girls led by Asha Boston, since originally coming up with the concept nine years ago with our first YWLEAD Cohort.
One of the flagship initiatives from The Dinner Table Doc, The Miseducation of Brown Girls, is a one-day summit and summer enrichment program designed to provide Black and Brown girls with the educational tools and community-building experiences necessary for success beyond the classroom. Rooted in civic engagement and leadership development, this transformative experience fosters confidence, critical thinking, and self-advocacy, ensuring that every participant leaves with the skills to shape their future and uplift their communities.
Weeks leading up to this event our YWLEADers met with the Dinner Table Doc youth and held info planning sessions where they discussed what the various topics, breakout sessions and overall run of show would be. All workshops were led and designed by YWLEAD students,
It was an empowering day of community and connection, and the event was featured on local news. YWCA Brooklyn looks forward to continuing a partnership with The Dinner Table Doc in service of the young women and girls of color in Brooklyn.
