On April 14th, alongside hundreds of other activists, leaders and advocates, the YWLEADers took to the streets to bring awareness to teen dating violence. The march organizers, Brooklyn nonprofit the Healing Center, has been hosting the annual NYC Teen Dating Violence Awareness Walk-a-Thon now for seven years, and as co-sponsors of the event YWCA Brooklyn was honored by the support and participation of it’s young leaders. Participants began at Cadman Plaza in Brooklyn Heights and culminated at New York City Hall.
One of YWCA Brooklyn’s YWLEADers addresses the crowd saying “we stand today as youth advocates in order to elevate the voices of those who are afraid to speak out for themselves.”
The demonstration served not only to bring attention to the fact that the highest rates of domestic violence affect teens and those in college, but also to stand in solidarity with survivors and show that they are not alone. Signs created by the marchers included power messages such as “Abuse is not love” and “Enough is enough”.
