To celebrate Black History Month at YWCA Brooklyn, we hosted a youth led event titled My Black is Beautiful, which focused on the intersection of colorism and sexism in communities of color. My Black is Beautiful provided a space for  young women to discuss and reflect on the impact of the infamous light skin vs. dark skin debate. A panel of speakers also offered their thoughts and feelings on the topic and expressed how they navigate academic and professional landscapes, while acknowledging – but resisting – social structures. As a result of My Black is Beautiful, we have opened the door to more conversations about the influence of racism and sexism in all of its forms.
