For over a decade we have been pushing for the right to have paid family leave in New York, through dedicated advocacy, gathering signatures on petitions and calling our legislators. The time has finally come – New York State now has the most generous paid family leave plan in the nation!
YWCA Brooklyn was proud to show up to fight for paid family leave, and thanks Congresswoman Nancy Pelosi for endorsing Governor Andrew Cuomo’s paid family leave proposal, joining the “Strong Families, Strong New York” campaign that called for the passage of the proposal this year.
We know that the lack of guaranteed paid family leave hurts low-income working mothers of color, and YWCA Brooklyn is on a mission to change that.
We work everyday to eliminate racism and economically empower women, and we know that the legislative advocacy of YWCA, our partners and friends together made this landmark plan a reality. The new Paid Family Leave plan will create real change for women, families and communities.
The plan goes into effect on January 1, 2018 and will offer up to 12 weeks of job-protected paid leave for workers facing a family health crisis or bringing a new child into the world.
Not only will this law benefit millions of New York’s families, but it sets a new standard for other states, and for Congress, in the push to make paid leave a reality for all Americans.
