On June 4th, the YWCA of Brooklyn and sister YWCAs from across New York State met in Albany for a mass rally and legislative day in support of the sweeping 10-point Women’s Equality Agenda. The women’s equality bill was released that morning, further inspiring the wonderfully diverse crowd of more than 1,000 women’s rights supporters. Among the featured rally speakers were activist/actress Cynthia Nixon and Sarah Weddington, the attorney who argued Roe v. Wade before the Supreme Court at the age of 26! The YWCA of Brooklyn is active on the NYC Steering WEA Committee and helped organize the event. The bill mandates equal pay, strengthens protections for victims of domestic violence and sex trafficking, takes aim at workplace and housing discrimination against women, protects reproductive freedom and establishes a zero-tolerance policy for sexual harassment in the workplace.
